Beer Tastings: Parva Tropicae

Proper Brewing Co. annually transforms its session IPA into a tropical delight. Last year it was guava; this time around, pineapple and mango purée.

Parva Tropicae - Proper Brewing - Beer Tastings
Proper Brewing Co.’s Parva Tropicae — “little tropical” — is a session IPA featuring pineapple and mango purée.

The double dry-hopped Parva Tropicae, with its pronounced fruity aromas, transports drinkers to a tropical island. Available exclusively at the brewery starting in mid-May 2018, this 4% alcohol-by-volume beer is a thirst-quencher that goes down easy.

The fruit is a bit subdued in the flavor, which makes for a nice, dry drinking experience. Idaho 7 and Citra hops promote the tropical vibe, though I perceived some floral/grassy notes in the finish.

The Proper Brewing Co. Story

Proper Brewing Co.’s story — and helpful alcohol procurement guide for out-of-towners.

Proper Brewing Co. began in 2013 as a restaurant and craft brewery in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Avenues Proper quickly made a name for itself by sourcing fresh, regional ingredients. Its space offered a comfortable spot to eat local and drink local.

Three years later, in 2016, Proper opened on Main Street near Salt Lake’s Granary District. Next door, Proper Burger Co. serves up gourmet burgers, completing a solid one-two punch and making it an enticing lunchtime or after-work hangout.

Proper Brewing Co. features a handful of arcade and pinball games. Pool and Skee-Ball are available as well. A bottle shop on-site sells higher-alcohol brews and logo merchandise.

Product Name: Parva Tropicae

Product Description: Proper Brewing Co.'s Parva Tropicae is an easy-drinking session IPA that features pineapple and mango purée. I picked up more mango than pineapple in the aroma. The fruit is more subtle in the flavor, allowing for a nice, dry drinking experience. I even perceived floral/grassy notes in the finish of the double dry-hopped brew.

Overall Impression

Proper Brewing Co. infuses a session IPA with tropical fruit, namely pineapple and mango purée (last year’s release featured guava).

The 2018 rendition: Parva Tropicae — “little tropical” — hit taps in mid-May and is available exclusively at Proper Brewing Co. The 4% ABV double dry-hopped brew showcases Idaho 7 and Citra hops.

  • Aroma: Tropical — more mango than pineapple for me
  • Appearance: Pours a hazy yellowish-orange with a dissipating white head
  • Flavor: Relatively dry without a ton of fruit sweetness; some bitterness with a hint of floral and grassy notes
  • Mouthfeel: Crisp and effervescent

But you don’t have to take my word for it.
