3 Beers with Joey - July 2021

Joey Cardaccio, service manager at Slackwater Sandy, joins Utah Beer News for another episode of our 3 Beers with Joey video series.

Each month, Cardaccio will chat with us about three new or noteworthy beers worth checking out. Here are the three beers selected for July 2021:

About the Utah Beer News Virtual Taproom

Utah Beer News conducts 15-minute video interviews with brewers, breweries, and everyday imbibers. These brief conversations are recorded virtually. They are uploaded the same day (or the next day) to the Utah Beer News YouTube channel.

Instead of the more in-depth interviews and brewery histories typical of the Utah Beer News Podcast episodes and Brewery Profile articles, these bite-sized conversations feature so-called “newsy” information. We talk about new beer releases, upcoming events, and general happenings in and around Utah’s craft breweries.

If you’re a brewer or brewery representative — or even an everyday imbiber with a story to share — and would like to participate in an upcoming episode, please fill out the contact form.

Slackwater Sandy Transcript (July 2021)

The following is a slightly edited transcript of our conversation. And here’s a previous article we wrote about Slackwater Sandy.

[Tim Haran]

Hi again, everyone. Thank you for joining Utah Beer News for the latest in our one-on-one conversations with local brewers, breweries, and everyday imbibers. I’m Tim Haran, founder of Utah Beer News. And we are back for our once-a-month check-in with Joey Cardaccio, service manager at Slackwater Pub & Pizzeria in Sandy. Welcome, Joey.

[Joey Cardaccio]

Hey, Tim, what’s up? How are you?

[Tim Haran]

I’m doing pretty good. Looks like you’ve got a little bit of a different background today. What’s going on?

[Joey Cardaccio]

We are on location on vacation at the Jersey Shore. At my parents’ house.

[Tim Haran]

Well, I’m glad you brought some beers with you. We’re here to talk a little bit about three beers. Yeah, let’s dive right in and what’s the first one you have for us?

[Joey Cardaccio]

I’ve got a good lineup this month. The first one I have is the Wasatch and Three Weavers Brewing collab. Three Weavers is a brewery in Inglewood, Calif. It’s a West Coast IPA. Clocking in at 7%. It’s made with Simcoe, El Dorado, and Mosaic hops. This one’s really nice. It’s got a little bit of pineapple, papaya, strawberry. Really subtle malt backbone and just a little bit of firm bitterness on the end.

This just came out maybe about a week, a week or two ago. I threw it on our July specials menu, too, so we’ve been selling a ton of these. It’s just a really good, you know, back in the day West Coast IPA. Really, really nice. And it’s only 7%, so it’s right up my alley. I really like this beer. It’s really good.

[Tim Haran]

Exactly. Yeah, I know Nils up at Wasatch is really excited about that one. I was able to taste it last week, too, and it is a really good beer. Like you said, old school West Coast IPA but with a little, you know, it’s got a little modern fruitiness to it. So, yeah, I like that one quite a bit as well.

[Joey Cardaccio]

Yeah, me too. It’s a really nice beer.

[Tim Haran]

Yeah, and Three Weavers, it’s nice we get some of that in the market now, so that’s cool to see.

[Joey Cardaccio]

I think this is technically the first Three Weavers beer in the state, if you want to call it a Three Weavers beer.

[Tim Haran]

For sure. Cool. Alright, number two.

[Joey Cardaccio]

Next, another local. We’ve got our friends at 2 Row coming out with their Dank Nugs Triple IPA clocking in at 11.9%.

If you haven’t tried this yet, this one’s made with Mosaic, Nugget, and Columbus hops. Really dank as the name suggests. I get a lot of tropical fruit. A little bit of light caramel in it. Very smooth for its high ABV.

A lot of big hop flavor, obviously. Malty backbone, but again, really smooth for being almost 12%. Really, really nice beer.

[Tim Haran]

Yeah, that’s a good one too. In fact, I picked some up over the weekend for the 4th of July. Had a bottle, I think it was last night I had a bottle and it’s deceptively easy drinking.

[Joey Cardaccio]

Scary.

[Tim Haran]

Yeah. A 12% beer but it’s just so smooth and a lot of hop character in that. It’s a really tasty beer. That’s a great selection. People should pick up that one as well

Cool. What are we going to wrap up with?

[Joey Cardaccio]

Last, we’re going to come in with an out-of-stater. Cascade. Everyone knows Cascade out of Portland, Ore. We brought in the Tropical Grasslands.

This is an oak-aged Gose with orange, lemongrass, coriander, salt, like a traditional gose has. Sour-salty right up front, which is expected. A little zesty citrus on the finish.

Really, really nice. Super-crushable. 4.7%. You can drink these all day long. Really, really nice beer.

It’s cool to see some Cascade coming into the state in 12-ounce cans these days. Instead of their bigger, more expensive bombers for bigger bottles.

[Tim Haran]

That sounds like a good one, too. That sounds like a great summer beer. Thinking of the islands. I love it. Cool.

[Joey Cardaccio]

Yeah, and we have a bonus for viewers and listeners this time that we were going to talk about last month but you’ve got something special right now at Slackwater before we get into the events you’ve got going on. What do you have on tap that’s kind of different for people this month?

[Joey Cardaccio]

So, people have probably been noticing in liquor stores the Original Sin ciders. Right now we have the Black Widow cider on draft. I have a couple kegs of it, so I should have it for most of the summer. It’s really, really good. That’s a blackberry apple cider. It’s delicious. It’s probably the best cider I’ve ever had.

And then we also carry their Dry Rosé cider in cans. That’s really good too. If you like rosé wine. It basically tastes like a rosé wine, it’s crazy. It’s really, really nice.

[Tim Haran]

Very good. You guys carry a nice selection of ciders there at Slackwater. I’m always impressed with what you have in cans and on tap now, which is very cool to see.

[Joey Cardaccio]

And then this month we have two tap takeovers. I’m trying to do two a month.

So we have Kiitos coming in on Wednesday, July 21. Our friends from Kiitos are going to come in, bring us four beers, do a normal $4 a pint.

And then Roadhouse Brewing in Jackson Hole is going to come in the following week, July 28, Wednesday, July 28.

I’m working out the details still on that but hopefully we can get some drafts in that haven’t been in the state yet and we can release them here at Slackwater. I’m pretty excited about that one.

[Tim Haran]

That’s awesome. I love a lot of Roadhouse beers I’ve had. And Kiitos, obviously, local guy. They do a lot of good work. That’s exciting to have you guys put some of their beers on special for that night.
