A year ago, mayors in Salt Lake and Ogden declared April to be Craft Beer Month in their respective cities. It’s unclear whether the officials intended for it to be a one-time deal or an annual celebration.
We haven’t seen much reference to it in 2019, leading us to believe it might have been a one-and-done, officially.
Nevertheless, Utah Beer News is choosing to celebrate Craft Beer Month annually. We hope you’ll join us. Consider it a warm-up for American Craft Beer Week in mid-May.
Craft Beer Month
The following isn’t an exhaustive list by any stretch. But it does include a few beer-related happenings along the Wasatch Front in April.
Of Note: Utah’s two newest breweries just missed being April beer babies. UTOG Brewing Company (Ogden) and Level Crossing Brewing Company (South Salt Lake) opened their doors in late March. Welcome to the community!
If you’re a brewery representative who’d like your events considered for these types of roundups, please send us details.
As always, it’s a good idea to verify event details with the individual organizers before venturing out. Enjoy Craft Beer Month in Salt Lake and Ogden!
April 20: RoHa Brewing Project 2-Year Anniversary
RoHa Brewing Project is opening its doors and organizing a parking-lot party to celebrate its two-year anniversary. We’ve enjoyed sampling RoHa’s beers over the last couple years.
The fun takes place from 1-7 p.m. on April 20. A food truck with be on-hand, as will a live band. Try your hand at various yard games, including giant Jenga and cornhole while sipping some suds. The full lineup of RoHa beers will be available for your drinking pleasure.

April 19: Craft by Proper Grand Opening
Dubbed “Utah’s Only Utah-Only Beer Bar,” Craft by Proper is set to open on April 19. Located in the heart of Sugar House, this unique destination will feature 36 taps and 80+ cans/bottles.
The best part? All those beers are brewed in the Beehive State.
The proprietors, who also own Avenues Proper, Proper Brewing Co., Proper Burger Co., and Stratford Proper, plan to focus their latest venture on providing selective brews from Wasatch Front breweries and harder to come by beers — for Salt Lake area drinkers, at least — from breweries in the far reaches of the state.
A basement area will feature arcade games and a second bar.
Keep an eye on Utah Beer News next week for an in-depth article and podcast episode.

April 10 & 13: FTR Road Show at Red Rock / Furlong Release
Motorcycle fans take note. Bonneville Indian Motorcycle is hosting what should be a fun little event at Red Rock Brewing. From 5-9 p.m. on April 10, check out the “FTR™ 1200 and FTR™ 1200 S with 120 horsepower and 85 ft-lbs of low-end torque at the twist of a throttle.”
I’m not sure what any of that means, but I do know this: Food and $2 beers will be available.
Oh, and on April 13 at 11 a.m. Red Rock’s Furlong Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout makes its 2019 public debut.
Well, technically, it’s available at the pubs starting on April 11. But on the 13th, you can stop by the Beer Store to pick up some bottles (limit four per person).

April 7: National Beer Day
Did you celebrate National Beer Day on Sunday. We at Utah Beer News made a weekend of it. We hit up a few local breweries on Saturday and then brewed our own Cream Ale on Sunday. Wrigley the Brew Dog helped.
It’s a great time to be a beer drinker in Utah!
April 5: Mountain West Cider House & Bar Kick-Off
Mountain West Hard Cider ushered in a new era with the opening of its Cider House & Bar. It’s the same location, but now you’re able to enjoy innovative cocktails — made with premium local spirits and, of course, Mountain West’s own hard cider.
During the kickoff event, I enjoyed a tasty cocktail featuring Waterpocket Distillery’s blanco rum and Mountain West’s Cottonwood dry-hopped cider. It’s definitely worth a visit (we’ve long been fans of Mountain West — it was featured on Episode 3 of the Utah Beer News Podcast).
Bonus: Mark May 24 on your calendars. That’s when the super-popular The Garten is scheduled to open for the season. Adjacent to the cidery, The Garten is a modern beer garden that features music, games, food trucks, and a full bar. It’s a good time, for sure.

Thanks for coming out to support our kick off night! We hope to see many more familiar faces in the days, weeks and months to come. Cheers!
